Memorial Toby King Executive Director

Toby King, the Executive Director of the United States Bone and Joint Decade/Initiative, (USBJD/USBJI) passed away December 29, 2020 in Chicago following a long battle with cancer. We want to reflect on Toby’s life and his accomplishments.

Toby grew up on the Isle of Wight, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire, England, and studied at Stowe School near Buckingham, but soon took his energies to professional associations around the world.

In August 2002, Toby became the first Executive Director of the U.S. Bone and Joint Initiative (then called the U.S. Bone and Joint Decade), an international collaborative movement created to raise the priority of the musculoskeletal health among researchers, educators, clinical practitioners and patients.

Toby was the engine that drove the USBJD “bus” and in its second decade USBJI. What an amazing CEO Toby has been. Toby recognized the importance of this initiative and what achievement of its goals could mean to patients suffering musculoskeletal conditions, to clinicians devoting their lives to caring for patients with these conditions and to researchers trying to understand and develop new treatments. Bringing all factions together to work in concert to raise awareness of the significant burden imposed by musculoskeletal conditions took amazing organizational skills.

He was so adept at keeping all groups focused on the value of working together to achieve common goals that would in turn pay dividends to the individual organizations is not an easy task. What a wonderful partner Toby has been to all of us who have been privileged to serve in the leadership of USBJI. Toby is a such a kind and gentle man who despite his easygoing demeanor is laser focused on organizational objectives.

Toby brought an enthusiasm, passion, and optimism to everything he did, and all of his relationships. His curiosity was key to the development of numerous programs and to the longstanding success of the USBJI.

Toby was a true leader and mentor for the Bone and Joint community. We will continue the drive Toby had for MSK research and live up to the example of commitment and leadership set by him. His positive energy and outlook will be greatly missed.

The King family has requested that donations be made to the USBJI Toby King Memorial fund through the USBJI Donation Form.
